3D Paper Making & Casting
Foundations workshop - Volume 1
Paper Lab Berlin
Led by Guy Lougashi
Workshop Overview
This immersive in-person workshop is the first of two volumes, offering a hands-on exploration of 3D paper making and casting techniques. Over six hours, participants will dive into the creative process, focusing on crafting unique paper-based sculptures and reliefs using recycled paper and single-part molds. Designed for both beginners and experienced artists, this workshop encourages experimentation and self-research, allowing participants to explore paper as a versatile and expressive medium.
This workshop is ideal for artists, designers, and creatives looking to expand their understanding of paper as a sculptural material. Whether you’re new to the practice or seeking to refine your techniques, this session provides the tools and knowledge to begin your journey into 3D paper art.
Paper Lab Concept
At the Paper Lab, we view paper as more than just a medium—it’s a conceptual space for innovation. Paper can be crafted from nearly any substance, offering endless creative possibilities. This workshop fosters a laboratory mindset, where participants engage in self-research, material exploration, and experimentation to uncover the full potential of paper.
We emphasize the exploration of paper as both a structural and expressive medium. Participants will engage in guided experimentation, where curiosity leads the way. Rather than focusing solely on predetermined outcomes, we encourage an investigative approach, allowing paper itself to guide the creative process.
Volume 1: Foundations of Mold making & paper Casting
(6 Hours)
Introduction & Exploration
Understanding paper as a sculptural medium: historical and contemporary perspectives
Working with recycled paper: preparing and processing pulp for casting
Exploring paper’s properties: flexibility, texture, and strength
Understanding how paper behaves when layered, cast, and dried
Mold Creation for Paper Casting
Designing and crafting single-part molds using accessible materials
Techniques for replicating shapes, textures, and reliefs in paper
Preparing molds for multiple uses and continuous experimentation
Hands-On Paper Making
Adjusting fiber content for different textures and densities
Exploring variations in texture, density, and translucency to control the final form
Hands-on experiments in blending recycled materials for custom paper compositions
Workshop Experience
This hands-on workshop is designed to provide both structured guidance and the freedom to explore personal interests. Participants will work in a collaborative environment, sharing discoveries and exchanging ideas. The tactile experience of working with paper in a physical space allows for immediate feedback and adjustment, making the learning process dynamic and interactive.
Expect a mix of demonstrations, guided exercises, and independent experimentation. By the end of the workshop, you will have a series of molds and finished paper sculptures, along with the knowledge to continue developing your practice.
