Paper Lab Concept:
At the Paper Lab, we treat paper as more than just a material—it’s a versatile medium and concept that encompasses a wide range of products and possibilities. Paper’s adaptability means it can be crafted from nearly any substance, reflecting its immense potential for creative expression. We foster a lab mindset, encouraging participants to immerse themselves in self-research and experimentation. Our approach emphasizes learning directly from the medium itself, allowing you to explore paper’s unique properties and create dynamic, expressive sculptural forms and 3D reliefs.
Concept and Structure of the Workshop:
This workshop combines traditional paper-making techniques with contemporary practices to unlock paper’s full potential for form, texture, and topography. The workshop is divided into three main areas:
Mold Creation for Paper Casting: Discover how to create molds for paper casting that enable you to produce multiple copies of your creations effortlessly, without specialized machinery.
Making Paper from Various Materials: Explore the process of making paper from natural, recycled, and contemporary materials, gaining insight into paper’s versatility.
Paper Casting Techniques: Learn advanced techniques for casting paper into molds, creating intricate three-dimensional sculptural objects and reliefs through innovative methods.
Introduction:
Our online workshops are live, interactive sessions that run like open discussions. Participants can engage with questions and options, receiving feedback and guidance throughout the process.
This workshop delves into the historical connection between paper and its uses by working with cellulose—the plant cell membrane used in making paper and textiles. You will create personalized layers that reflect your impressions and ideas. Paper’s unique characteristics as a thin, strain-resistant skin allow it to hold shapes, enabling the creation of lightweight, sculptural forms, including detailed 3D reliefs. The molds crafted in this workshop are reusable, providing a foundation for ongoing experimentation and artistic exploration.
Workshop Details:
Participants will gain a thorough understanding of paper-making processes, including preparation, casting, drying, and mold removal. The workshop offers a fresh perspective on paper-making, moving beyond traditional methods to emphasize creative exploration. Engage in self-research and experimentation, focusing on learning directly from the medium rather than just replicating aspirational images.
This workshop is perfect for individuals with no prior background or experience in working with paper. We start from the very basics and progressively delve into advanced methods, ensuring a comprehensive learning experience for everyone.
First Part:
Learn to craft various molds for paper casting using a range of materials and how to replicate any dimension, shape, or texture, including sculptural objects and 3D reliefs.
Second Part:
Explore advanced techniques for mold creation and paper making. Learn the basics of creating paper from plants, recycled materials, fabrics, and more. Delve into advanced methods for paper casting and immersion techniques, gaining insights into novel applications and innovative approaches.
Workshop Format:
Each 150-minute session is recorded, and all materials are provided permanently upon enrollment. You will have access to video presentations, demonstrations, supplementary articles, and detailed documentation of processes and creative works.
